Who Is Cameron Hanes? A Look at His Amazing Life

Cameron Hanes: Bowhunting, Keep Hammering, Workout, Diet, Podcast, Joe Rogan, David Goggins

I first learned about Cameron Hanes after watching him on Joe Rogan’s podcast a few years back. He is an incredibly inspirational person, and his blue-collar, hard working lifestyle is one worthy of imitation.

But what else is there to know about Cameron Hanes?

Cameron Hanes, born October 2, 1967, is an endurance athlete, backcountry bowhunter, author, entrepreneur, and podcast host. He is the owner of Keep Hammering brand and an Under Armour sponsored athlete.

In addition to all the above, Hanes still works a flexible 9-5 job, as Purchasing Representative, with the Springfield Utility Board, which provides safe and reliable utility services to the Springfield, Oregon community. He has worked with the company for over 24 years.

Amazingly, Hanes was born less than two months after Rogan was born on August 11, 1967.

“There is no secret to it. It’s punching that time clock, it’s putting in work every single day. The sooner you realize that, the quicker you are going to get to the path where you want to go.”

Early Life

Hanes grew up in Eugene, Oregon and described his childhood as growing up rough. “Nobody would want to trade me with how I grew up,” Hanes said.

Hanes said he did not have a lot of confidence when he was a kid. His dad wasn’t around much and his stepdad didn’t see eye to eye. He described himself as floating and missing something.

That’s when bowhunting become an outlet for Hanes and where he started finding confidence and respect from his peers. He realized the harder he worked, the more success he had and used that to propel him forward.

Bowhunting

Hanes secret to success, for life or bowhunting, is simple but not easy. It is all about hard work, pursuing discomfort, consistency, and never being satisfied. Perhaps, that’s why Joe Rogan finds him to be so inspirational.

“The key to what I do is repetition and being consistent. The only way that happens – you can’t shortcut it, it’s just reps,” Hanes said.

Hanes uses a motto “Lift – Run – Shoot”, for the things he does every day. Lift weights, run long distance, and shoot arrows. That all peaks when he gets out into the mountains and chases wild game.

Hanes is a world-class bowhunter and wildlife expert. He is so good that Under Armour picked him up as an ambassador for their brand. They even created a Cameron Hanes boot, the UA CH1 Gore-tex hunting boot, available for purchase here.

Cameron Hanes Workout – Lift, Run, Shoot

Hanes does three things daily with no exceptions – lift weights, run long distances, and shoot arrows at targets.

Usually, he wakes up very early (2:45am) and starts his running workout. His general goal is to get in a marathon every day.

“I like walking out of that house. It’s like a warm, comfortable house, really no reason to leave. Except, I don’t think anything great happens being warm and comfortable.”

-Cameron Hanes

On a typical day, he goes to his 9-5 job at Springfield Utility Board, and takes an extended lunch to get his second run of the day, usually another 8-10 miles.

In the afternoon, or whenever he can fit it in, he will pound the weights, kettlebells, and dumbbells. Hanes prides himself in being in the peak shape and everything he does is to become a better bowhunter, and ultimately putting food on the table.

In addition to all his workouts, Hanes’s trainer said that since he trains everyday – he has to stretch and recover every day, so he fits that in too.

Hanes launched the Keep Hammering 5k, in Salt Lake City, Utah that has exploded in popularity. Because of high demand, the race has expanded to other cities and also features a 25k, for seasoned athletes.

Cameron Hanes Diet

On one YouTube video, Hanes described his typical diet for one day. Generally, he tries to get lots of protein in his diet and eats about every 45 minutes, throughout the day.

For his typical day, Hanes eats 4 Eggs and toast for breakfast, followed by a protein shake. For time in between meals, he snacks on nuts, peanut butter, whole wheat bread, carbs, and coffee. “Because I run so much, I do need carbs,” Hanes said. He likes to eat a turkey and egg sandwich, or green salad into his diet as well.

The key for him is preparation and he packs his food the night before for work the next day.

Obviously, Hanes avoids sugar, sodas, and fast food. Instead, for carbs he makes sure it is whole wheat bread/pasta, or oatmeal. If he decides to drink a soda, it is zero calorie and sugar-free.

Also, Hanes said that he avoids alcohol: “I ask a lot out of my body every single day, and alcohol is not going to help.”

Keep Hammering Brand & Podcast

“A lot of people, they want to shortcut it, they want to get to the top without ever being at the bottom.”

-Cameron Hanes

Hanes sells Keep Hammering apparel, shirts, hats, and merch on his website. I loved it so much, I got some myself:

The Keep Hammering podcast was a good one, although Hanes eventually decided to stop doing it. He said that he felt like he had said everything he wanted to already, and his message boils down to one thing: “Work hard.”

Podcasts He’s Been On

Although, Hanes stopped doing his own podcast, he still makes appearances on his buddies shows.

He’s been on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast many times, including episodes: 450, 567, 759, 815, 944, 957, 1013, 1074, 1112, 1365, and 1542.

Hanes has also been on:

  • Cleared Hot Podcast (Andy Stumpf)
  • Gritty Bowman (Brian Call)
  • The Fighter and The Kid (Bryan Callen and Brendan Schaub)

Cameron Hanes Son

Athletic genes run in the Hanes family. Cameron’s dad, Bob Hanes, was very athletic and a baseball coach, but died from liver and kidney problems despite having been clean and sober for many years.

Hanes’s son, Justin Truett, is an athletic machine. He beat David Goggins pull-up record for most in a 24 hour period. The old record, set by Goggins was 4030, and Truett set the new record of 4100 in 18 hours.

Also check out David Goggins book, Can’t Hurt Me. I’ve read a ton of books and this book changed my life. See why it’s one of the best books I’ve ever read.
